"White clicktivism: why are some Americans woke online but not in real life?"

Should be interesting 🤔

It don't matter what you say or do or believe.

I think the answer to this question is pretty simple: people are not naturally heroes, and usually vote and behave to advance their own interests. Persuading people actively to vote and behave against their own interests is phenomenally difficult. This is especially the case when racial discrimination is actually the by-product of class differences themselves largely factored out of the discussion. To give an example, the author claims that "Black and Hispanic people were being displaced" from a gentrifying area, but what's happening more precisely is that poorer people, many of whom happen to be black and Hispanic, are being displaced. Author Brianna Holt, however, is unable to perform an analysis along class lines, because as a successful journalist with frequent by-lines in the Guardian and NYT, she might find herself coming out on the wrong side of the class divide.

There is, of course, plenty of racism in the United States as in many other Western societies, but the one thing that it fundamentally isn't is structural (an example of real "structural racism" would be an apartheid system). What we really face is "unstructured racism". We know, for instance, that Americans with obviously non-Caucasian-sounding names, or simply with names that are disproportionately carried by black people, are less likely to get invited to job interviews. But this is fundamentally a matter of individual prejudice on the part of particular employers - precisely not a structural matter - and it's unclear what kind of "systemic response" could solve it.

Otherwise, one of the numerous things wrong with this self-indulgent article is that imputes limitless power, agency and financial resources to white liberals. The following sentence is a case in point:

“Those guys who buy in East Austin because it’s cool and hip and cheaper than living on West 6th Street might be displacing a faceless Black family but there is a Whole Foods now and a cool bar scene.”

Note the assumption that the "guys who buy" are people who chose to buy in East Austin when they could (at a little manageable financial sacrifice) have instead chosen to reside in West 6th Street. Actually the reason that neighbourhoods gentrify is usually because they are the most expensive places affordable on a normal middle-class salary. In the British city where I live, the area inhabited by academics used to be (logically) a few minutes' walk from the main facilities of the university; this became unaffordable to all but businessmen and those who had inherited significant wealth; so successive generations of academics moved out first south of the centre, than east, then further east; I bought in the latter area - a classic newly gentrifying one - at the absolute limit of the mortgage I could secure. The alternative was to buy somewhere further and cheaper still, which would presumably also have contributed to some kind of process of gentrification eventually. But the article inhabits a fantasy world in which white liberals are by definition wealthy enough to "opt for a neighborhood that won’t place you as a gentrifier".

And what precisely would it mean to "give up higher salaries"? Deliberately apply for low-paying jobs? Tell your boss you want a lower salary than he offered you so as not to skew the average? What precisely is the author demanding here?

I KNOW such discrimination and racism is pandemic in the US and I for one would never come back with any hate filled scree to you about it.
Until Trump took over the senate and WH, there were divisions and major racism in the US but he whipped up his base so much they are LITERALLY coming out with weapons as shown just the other day where they showed up ARMED with rifles and pistols to the HOME of the secretary of state of Michigan after the failed attempt to literally kidnap her.

I have a multiracial multicultural family and of course you never acknowledge that fact and I am VERY familiar with racism by the cops here in our Proud Boy town.

They don't even like ME, since my heritage is Irish and this so-called town is 'Pennsylvania Dutch, where they say, I'm Pennsylvania Dutch, DUMB AND PROUD OF IT' And they are serious, No Irish need apply forget the rest of the racism here.
Before you take off on that last sentence, I was NOT implying the racism against me here was worse than the racism against the rest of my family here.

So who has the reading problem now? I SAID I would never write a hate filled scree LIKE others have done here against YOU. I did NOT say I expected such from you.

YOU are the one who needs to better comprehend what others write.

How about this: Don't talk to me anymore. Take your OWN hate elsewhere.

@Duchess64

You think minorities will band together to kill white people or worse (as you say) in some delusional future of yours?

LMFAO

You're insane.
