A poll on who 1000 Americans trust:

http://www.harrisinteractive.com/harris_poll/index.asp?PID=688

Scientists very much on the up (3 times more trusted than Lawyers), Presidents and newsreaders viewed as increasingly dishonest. Actors beat Lawyers to most untrusted profession award shock!

Nice link. Thanks, very interesting, odd how the people still trust the President a bit more than Congress. Sad that one of the most trustworthy(Teachers) are so low paid.😞

The problem with things like this are that you cannot always generalize. My scoutmaster was a lawyer and I trust him completely. I don't trust Johnnie Cochran at all. My best friend from high school is now a defense attorney and clearly he has my trust.

The subject they are talking about should also be considered.... If you ask a scientist about who should be president, I think their answers are probably irrelevant, though if they explain why, that may be useful. If you ask a geologist about global warming I will listen, if you ask Al gore about global warming, I won't.

Finally, reputation is important. NPR is worth listening to while FOX news and the Daily Show are worth listening to skeptically (I like to hear multiple perspectives).

I'm not so sure the actual subject that professional is talking about is important, it's whether their answer can be trusted (or rather the public's opinion of whether they can be trusted). In the poll's view a scientist is more likely to give an answer that pervades trust. So in your example they are viewed more likely not to irrationally claim Mr X should be President for nonsense reason Y. Al Gore might know what he's talking about on science, but like you say would not be viewed with great trust, which is why he's such a big target for the anthropogenic global warming contrarians.

How do you figure that teachers are "trustworthy"? Where I come from, they enter college with the lowest aptitudes, graduate with a worthless "teaching" degree, do not have mastery of any core subject that they will "teach," and spend most of their time "teaching" nonsense like "social justice," "save the rainforests" and "global warming." Moreover, the teachers unions force all of their dues toward financing Democrats and pro-union candidates in local, city, county, state and national election. In the meantime, we're spending $500 billion per year to "educate" our children but when they graduate, they're unprepared for college level work. As to the myth of teachers being low paid, one study I recently read stated that teachers earn more than many professions, including architects:

In effect, the whole field is a scam to shield the incompetent while shaking down homeowners to afford nincompoops an unearned lifestyle.

I have to disagree. The reason people are trusted in a certain subject area and not in another is because they have done more work in that field which usually leads to a greater understanding of the issue. Someone who works in another field will not (generally) have that knowledge base and is therefor more likely to draw incorrect conclusions.

Then again, perhaps what the poll shows is that people don't actually think about this before deciding to trust someone or to distrust them.

There are no lawyers or public school teachers on the board of directors or employed there, so you tell me.

Considering it's sole purpose is to push right-wing policies, I would guess below the average actor.

I trust you even less since you seem to think no point of view is worth arguing if it doesn't comport with your own.
