Did Iran's leaders call for Israel to be "wiped off the map"? Too many people seem to believe that translation error, so I decided to devote a thread to the subject.

If any of you insist on defending the original translation then debate it! Let us put an end to this once and for all.

Originally posted by Metal BrainThe Guardian article was great fuel for the debate on this matter here at RHP but unfortunately - as you will realise - it is now nearly 6 years old and therefore does not address any of the anti-semitic, holocaust-denying, explicitly-threatening things that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said in the meantime. Have you got any links to Guardian articles 'explaining' what Ahmadinejad meant dating back to comments he has made during the subsequent half decade or that he made in 2011 or 2010? No. There is a reason for this.

The Guardian – “Lost in Translation“ is an article [the same Guardian article you cited, in fact] from 2006
Washington Post – “Did Ahadinejad really say Israel should be wiped off the map?“ cites an article from 2005
NY Times – “Just How Far Did They go, Those Words Against Israel?“ cites an article from 2006
AntiWar.com – “Wiped off the Map? — The Rumor of the Century?“ cites an article from 2007 which refers back to an interview and article from 2006.

There is no basis for that claim. Romney is a liar for claiming Iran stated it wants to bomb Israel. It never happened.

Do you disagree with Juan Cole?
Originally posted by FMFOnce again, this thread is about the "wiped off the map" comment and translation. It makes no difference that it was 6 years ago. We are still talking about it, right?
When Juan Cole wrote about that comment 6 years ago do you think he was preempting whatever Ahadinejad would say in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011?
Ahmadinejad didn't make the statement in 2007 did he? If you are trying to make a point you have failed thus far. Seems to me that you are trying to digress into other statements since then because you don't want to talk about the "wiped off the map" mistranslation.
Once again, do you disagree with Juan Cole? Yes or no?
Originally posted by Metal BrainYou seriously don't think it makes a difference? There is a reason you are zooming in on a comment made six years ago.

Originally posted by FMFThis thread is about one comment. If you are too gutless to confine yourself to the "wipe Israel off the map" comment, start your own thread. I may post comments on it, but don't insist on avoiding the whole basis of this thread.
Once again, do you think Juan Cole was preempting anything and everything Ahadinejad might have gone on to say, and has said, in the intervening years since 2006... 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011?
Or you could just admit Juan Cole is right and Romney is a liar and we can move on to those other comments later. Until then, stop trying to digress away from the subject of this thread.
Originally posted by Metal BrainAny idiot knows Iran won't bomb Israel unless they are attacked first, so what does it matter what Romney says in the context of seeming tough and "conservative" for the GOP primaries?
