"From this point forward it will be necessary to keep in mind that the main thread and, in a certain sense, the guiding principle of Pope Leo's Encyclical, and of all of the Church's social doctrine, is a correct view of the human person and of his unique value, inasmuch as "man ... is the only creature on earth which God willed for itself".38 God has imprinted his own image and likeness on man (cf. Gen 1:26), conferring upon him an incomparable dignity, as the Encyclical frequently insists. In effect, beyond the rights which man acquires by his own work, there exist rights which do not correspond to any work he performs, but which flow from his essential dignity as a person."

"This is the place to mention once more the role of trade unions, not only in negotiating contracts, but also as "places" where workers can express themselves."

"The State must contribute to the achievement of these goals both directly and indirectly. Indirectly and according to the principle of subsidiarity, by creating favourable conditions for the free exercise of economic activity, which will lead to abundant opportunities for employment and sources of wealth. Directly and according to the principle of solidarity, by defending the weakest, by placing certain limits on the autonomy of the parties who determine working conditions, and by ensuring in every case the necessary minimum support for the unemployed worker.45"

"Another kind of response, practical in nature, is represented by the affluent society or the consumer society. It seeks to defeat Marxism on the level of pure materialism by showing how a free-market society can achieve a greater satisfaction of material human needs than Communism, while equally excluding spiritual values. In reality, while on the one hand it is true that this social model shows the failure of Marxism to contribute to a humane and better society, on the other hand, insofar as it denies an autonomous existence and value to morality, law, culture and religion, it agrees with Marxism, in the sense that it totally reduces man to the sphere of economics and the satisfaction of material needs."

"The crisis of Marxism does not rid the world of the situations of injustice and oppression which Marxism itself exploited and on which it fed. To those who are searching today for a new and authentic theory and praxis of liberation, the Church offers not only her social doctrine and, in general, her teaching about the human person redeemed in Christ, but also her concrete commitment and material assistance in the struggle against marginalization and suffering."

Are workers' rights being ignored ?

Next Sunday is the first of May, which is traditionally a holiday to mark the struggle for workers' rights.
However, in recent years May Day has become associated with protests against capitalism, globalisation, and even the war in Iraq.

In many countries, union membership is at an all-time low. Only 28.5% o ...[text shortened]... und the world?
-What role has the fall of communism and the rise of the global economy played ?
There is always room for a movement and the rights of workers.

There was a need when civilization faced off against "monopoly" and Henry Ford finally saw that he could "give in" and win.

He did. A lot of people saw how he did it. Old Henry was stupid at first. Now he is a genius.

"Pay more to the workers fool. They are your best customers. They can't buy a car without a decent wage."

The world is not all smooth and lovely. I have been to places where slaves are bought openly on the street. What rights do they have?

Well. For one, they have in their future the right to become recognized as "workers". Too bad that mafiosos the world over could give a crap about these desparately poor souls. "If you got no funds for du union, you ain't got crap, pal!"

"Idealism got killed by the mob and money at the intersection of graft and corruption."

Another famous old saying I just made up.
