You do see the similarities though shatmixer, a council bureaurat visits "local hard working shop owners" suggests to the shop owners they might like to 'ahem' choose *nudge, wink, chuckle* to give the council money and in return some very, very unfortunate affair concerning their business may be averted.
The "local hard working shop owners" are purchasing protection from the council for protection from what the council might do.
Council tax rates are based on local property prices and councils are democratically elected, the nice hard working shop owner is a minority most shop owners own massive chains of massive shops paying the actual hard working folk minimum wage whilst they swan about on yachts and now the corporate whore vajoma doesn’t think they should pay for their own roads, refuse collection or any other amenity that's required for their shops to operate 🙄
The Mafia is just another scumbag corporation leeching off the poor but at least they don’t get knighted and occasionally we get to see them riddled with bullets, if only all corporate scum faced the same fate.

If corporations paid a realistic proportion of their profits we could probably do away with small business taxes and rates altogether. As it is local authorities rely on this income to keep the old and infirm in their communities alive.
