Bah, there can't even be a finite field in which 1+1 = 1, although 1+1+1 = 1 in a certain field. Similarly, there is a field in which 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1 = 1. Here's a puzzle: for what positive integers n does there exist a field in which adding n 1s together gives 1?
