there's a huge body of literature in the philosophy of science about why it is reasonable to believe in results that have been published in the mainstream scientific literature, bearing in mind that scientific results are always provisional in a sense. once you're familiar with this and in a position to debate the subject knowledgeably, we can proceed. but it would just be frustrating for me to "debate" this with you until you have done this.

Well, if both you and Policestate agree that he treats you better than you treat him, maybe there's something you could do to treat him better.

Of all the people in your evolving periphery during an entire lifetime...

* 5% will treat you better than you choose or have the opportunity to
treat them. Your mother or father, maybe a sister or brother as well
as good samaritan strangers along the way will fit in this category.

* 90% will probably treat you about the sa ...[text shortened]... by giving the benefit of
doubt and treating others better than they deserve. Virtue matters.
While I agree with your viewpoint, I think you are simplifying way too much with your 5/90/5 spectrum (and, of course, making up statistics out of thin air). I don't think you can quantify objectively how someone treats you. Often you will perceive it quite differently than the other person. For example, I think in many cases of "ungrateful" children, the children perceive the "good treatment" by their parents as patronising, overprotection, lack of respect for the child's decisions and opinions, or as something done only to buy the love of the child. So they reciprocate the perceived bad treatment they get from their parents. From their point of view, they would fall into the second category, while from the parents' view, it would be the third one.

Of course it's oversimplified, of necessity, into the comfort zone

parlance of general forum post bites. Otherwise it wouldn't get read.

The key word is 'spectrum'... 5/90/5 are little more than horseback

approximations, which would probably vary in pristine cultures versus

advanced, by continents, hemispheres, etc. Personal experiences

and perceptions also introduce tremendous local/subjective variables.

Pleased you agreed with the viewpoint expressed. This is a first... 🙂

The most effective way to treat people is the old "talk softly but carry a big stick". Read up on the Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma.

Believe the "carry a big stick" quote came from Teddy Roosevelt, 26th

U.S. President, with reference to a nation's interests and its enemies.

I guess I follow The Tarnished Rule. Treat well, those who that you well. Make those who treat you badly, wish they were never born.
Not a very Chrisitian atitude.

Open faced honesty and the hard won candor of humility

are most definitely reflective of the mind of Christ.
