Though an extraordinarily high percentage of the world population will be quick to deny or dismiss, blithely ignore or blindly disagree, strenuouly dispute or debate the least mention of the hard fact... it's still true that nobody ever found or ever will find happiness in a bottle. The cheap numbing buzz provides temporary stimulation and enhanced conviviality at best in the short term. In the long haul immoderate use of alcohol to achieve a few minimal and transient benefits often involves too steep a price, which more than offsets any escapist benefits or marginal utility of return. We all have memories of otherwise wonderful people who were too indecisive and weak to say no.

Disagree. Nobody ever found relief from unhappiness in a bottle (of alcohol, which is what we're talking about here), but that's not the same thing. If you are already feeling quite well, opening up a bottle of good Belgian beer can make you very happy indeed. Of course, in that case, it's the taste which makes you truly happy, with the alcohol being just an assistant to the flavour, but my point stands. Good alcohol, used in moderation, can make you more happy - what it can't do is make you less unhappy.

SB, please note the key linkage premised in the post "... immoderate use of alcohol... " We're in full agreement on the casual pleasures of beer, wine, brandy or spirits in moderation. Our sidebar chat distills down to a matter of personal taste and choice... as well as ownership. Look in the mirror of your soul. Ask one question. Do you own the glass or does the glass own you?

You're insane. But you probably knew that. Take sleeping pills, that's what I do on work nights.

All of the insane people know each other.

How else would you know the other guy was insane?

I get insomnia occasionally (once or twice a month). It sucks!

I have cut down on coffee. I don't drink sugary soda so that's not it.

Mostly, I'm just thinking, thinking, thinking. Like someone put my brain on auto-pilot with no filter. So some weird stuff is going on there. Some irrational, dream-like thoughts along with typical mommy anxiety.

I no longer even drink during the week at all since this doesn't seem to help.

Don't eat at least 4 hours before bed.

It might help to make changes like exercise, too. I find I sleep better when I work out at least 4 days a week.

i was at the gym last wednesday and jiu-jitsu on thursday night and still couldn't sleep, i usually do all the things you said (well eating 2 hours before bed if enough for me, anymore and i wake up hungry), normally when i can't sleep i sleep ok when i do drift off but this time i just kept waking up, my head was all over the place. thinking about stuff, some of it not even making any sense.

i don't really drink that much anymore but i don't think that ever affected my sleep, i was craving a joint though (haven't smoked in 3 years), late teens i had serious trouble sleeping and that seemed to be the only thing that calmed me down, i've never taken sleeping tablets.

do you sleep ok when you do finally get to sleep or are you waking up through the night?

I usually have one horrible night and the NEXT night, I sleep like the dead.

Maybe its time for another trip, Trevor.

I think that my insomnia is infrequent and due to my worries, mostly. I know other moms who experience it sometimes.

Some people just put their heads down and pass out each night. I've never been like that. I always toss and turn each night unless I am truly exhausted.

i always envied those people, even when i'm not thinking about much it takes me a while to get to sleep.

funny how the mind works, how was your sleeping before you had kids?

i'd love a permanent trip 🙂 trying to get something sorted for a couple of months either during or just after xmas. if this winter is anything like the one i missed last year i'll freeze to death. it's supposed to be summer and i've been walking around while wearing a coat.

Relax, don't worry about it, don't bother seeing a doctor, you're just going a little more insane is all. 😛

I would like to suggest stop collecting skulls, that would keep me awake nights to, I think.
