I was following this story earlier. This guy hacked into a WEP encrypted wireless router and terrorized the next door neighbors for years and had done it to at least 2 other families. A lot of the comments on this post decry the dude getting 18 years, which will probably be more like 7 or 8 but he did a lot of damage and made terrorist threats against the vice president, trying to get the neighbors indited for those threats.

Every once and a while a story like this pops up. Crazy what someone can do in this day and age with medium level programming skills.

I feel there is a type of unspoken honor code that one abides by in this profession considering that the masses are completely clueless to the dangers. The complexities of 'hacking' (which is actually not at all complex) is out of this world to most because the vast majority of programmers are not and will not ever be criminals.

But a 15 year sentence? I don't agree with that, but I don't agree with the way the U.S. incarceration system is set up in general. He most likely needs mental heath rehabilitation, and prison will definitely not help in that regard.

All true, but in this instance, he has clear grudge issues, and psychological work might help. Probably won't get that in prison. The 15 year sentence is usually half that so he will be out in about 8 years, 2019 or so.
The question is, with no psychological help, will he still hod a grudge then? Even if he gets psychological help, he may be able to mask his grudges if he wants to. How would you be sure he would not just go after that same family after he gets out of jail? Or start the same thing up with some other family which has done twice before.

Those are the important questions. But now we have now moved from this particular case to the bigger picture. What are the main underlining purposes of the current prison system, and does it achieve its goals? The Supreme Court recently ruled that California is running its prisons in a unconstitutional manner.

We could put the question of this particular case in the debates forum, but posting in there is akin to swimming in shark infested waters. 😕
