Quarter? hell, not even a dimeπŸ™‚
Seriously, on playchess.com they announce these losers a couple
of times a week, I don't think they ban them but what they do is
reset their rating to 1200 or something. Its probably more
humiliating than being banned.
How do you explain your 2300 just went to 1200? So they probably
slink off back to the gutters where they belong. They seem to have
a need to be accepted, so they probably come back with another
handle, but they are bound to be caught again because they don't
understand how much engine play stands out when you analyze the
moves up close.

In the justice system, evidence isn't always disclosed to the general public. We just accept the fact that someone was convicted by a jury of their peers and that the evidence did exist. I feel this is a precedant we all must take into account here at RHP. Russ and any others who have come across the evidence they did must have believed it to be credible and thus made their decision accordingly. It is neither our place nor right to question them, its is rather to accept their rulings and go about our business.

Section 3b

(b) You will not use chess engines, chess software, chess computers or consult any third party to assist you in any game. Chess books and databases can be consulted during play
Surely books and databases are third parties??

Books and databases are an exception. Corr. games can last for months. If books and databases are banned, then the players can't read any chess literature for all of those months, or else they might read something that applies to one of their games. Neither can they prepare for OTB tourneys, because they probably use the same openings OTB that they do in corr. The restriction would be unreasonable and impractical.

The point is, it has to be just your own effort. No letting others think for you once you are out of the opening.

Oh, once you are out of the opening. I see.

I guess the opening is really just a warmup, like they do in tennis. McEnroe should have got his coach to warm up for him, save energy. All that shouting makes one tired.

I didn't say it was practical to outlaw books or DBs.

The point is many people on this site have a whole fat arses load of stuff to say about the immorality of using chess engines, but happily consult books and DBs during their online games. To me, you are getting third hand assistance with books, and I don't see the point of using them for games sake. But I don't really give a shit if people use them against me or not.

No it doesn't. "Books" covers endgame books and middlegame books too!

The idea of playing with 'just your own effort' is an illusion. You can't play the game well without borrowing (many) ideas from chess theory.

While I'm delighted to have seen the action taken by disclosing the names of proven cheaters, I have to say I'm pretty disgusted as to how it was brought about.

I think it is terrible that the person who can shout the loudest the longest in the forums and create the most discontent and ill feeling amongst users, is now setting the priorities for the site.

I can really feel the love in these forums tonight.

It took about 10 months of hard work for this day, and here it is. My wife sure is happy, and realizes there is a lot more work to be done... but at least the hours spent so far were not a total waste of time, as finally something has been done with the overwhelming evidence.

All those nights while you were wasting time trying to catch people, she was forced to use an engine of her own ! 😲

Once more.

Post hoc ergo propter hoc is a logical fallacy. This did NOT happen simply because no1 shouted. The Game Mods have made perfectly clear they were already looking at these issues. Some of the players banned are ones that no1 has said NOTHING about.
