I would say that the one commonality that all (most) of us share is an addictive personality.

Addicts enable/feed their mutual addictions.

Put two chain-smokers in a room and you will soon have a thick hazy fog hanging over their heads.

Addicts also drive each other crazy and fight like mad men.

Put two alcoholics in the same room and they'll soon be fighting over the last drop of cheap vodka or over which one has the more serious problem.
