Also NEVER buy a second hand laptop.

Mine died recently, I am using my gf's now. I understand why they sold me that piece of crap.

I am also wondering if Macs are any better. One of my friend was telling me last night that they do not get viruses?! and they are built on better hardware.

Is that true?

I do not have a lot of money but if it will last me for a good 3-5 years I can pay up to $2000.

Definitely not DELL.

try tiger direct.com

Ram is somewhat important, I should think 1G is more than suff.
The processor is more important, and should be at least 2GHz.

Any macbook will do, a little on the pricy side, but they last forever, and do not get viruses unless you try to get them, no pop-blocker installation required, faster internet service...

Are there any obvious drawbacks to a macbook?

Why not? Both my current desktop computer and my laptop are Dells, and I haven't had any problems with them, apart from some weird problem with the batteries of my laptop, which resulted in getting new batteries very shortly before the guaranty ran out, so it was actually a good thing. The customer service was flawless.
