Is anyone else amazed at the amount of coverage there has been on the Pope?
I am truly amazed.
I was also amazed to see the US President, the first Lady and two US ex-presidents present. Very heavy representations from all countries and corners of the earth. Representatives of Hinduism, Budhism, Islam, Judaism, Protestant Churches and of course the Eastern Orthodox Churches were there to pay their respects.
I expected a report from his funeral and maybe two or three documentaries about his life and achievements, but what the media have done in covering the events and remembering John Paul was really unexpected and amazing.
Now we'll have to wait for the white smoke coming from the chimney of the Sixtine Chapel ......... Habemus Papam !

I did'nt blame the pope. 🙂
you did suggest that mother teresa should have received more recognition.
and you did it in a thread about the pope.
but it has nothing to do with the pope.
mother teresa died just a few days after from the death of princess di.
the media had cashed in for a few good stories by playing princess di up as a do gooder nice person, they had no time for a outrageously hard core super extreme do gooder like mother teresa at that stage ... it would only have made their princess di stories look stupid and ingenuine.

Being the relation of them both being prominent catholics, and both having died, and the amount of news coverage being brought up.

This is not the debate forum, if you want to debate whether the death of princess di or the pope caused mother theresa's funeral coverage to be any smaller, I suggest you debate it there.

ps one of your recs above is mine.
It is an odd one for me all this coverage in Britain, as a general rule the English government has persicuted Catholics with extreme predudice, sure we may not legally burn them at the stake any more, but there are still laws in Britain that for example exclude a Catholic from being King or a catholic marrying an heir to the throne.
Policticians and religious leader should be banned from all funerals or events of mass public greif, they are just there to gain coverage and votes which is quite disgusting really.
It is just a reflection of 24hour news coverage, to much TV with not enough quality to fill it. If they are going to cover to this extent it would have been nice to have seen a real apprasial of the impact of the Pope, rather than interview after interview of people saying how great he was. When I was at school we were taught about Lech Walesa, and all the TV coverage seemed at the time to suggest he was the main mover in ending Russian dominance in Poland. Now. out of nowhere it is the Pope. Now, I do not know a lot about this, but it does seem a reactionary rewriting of History to suit the times? I am sure as a Pole the Pope did a lot, but was he really reponsible for the fall of Communisim in Poland as some BBC coverage is suggesting?
The other thing I have noticed, as has been mentioned, is the strong attacks in the press against the Catholic church for its failure to relax its stance on the use of condoms in Aids riven areas of Africa seems to have been forgotten.
