Rugby players are ten times tougher than American footballers but sorry guys, you simply cannot play American football without padding. Some of the tackling in American football would mame or worse in seconds, and to suggest that it should be played without proper protection is just ill-informed rugby big-headedness IMHO.

I repeat, rugby players are ...[text shortened]... guys, don't slag of the entire sport because you go onto the pitch wearing nothing but cotton.
I played both in college. From my experiences; in Rugby you get hit hard and often, but in American Football you get hit a lot harder but a lot less often.

Both types of sportman are tough in different ways, wouldn't say one's tougher than the other though.

Professional cyclists are the toughest of ALL. OK, there is a difference between the pain of endurance and the pain of impact, but how many sportsmen and women work, often at levels like 80% of their maximum HR, for up to six hours a day for three weeks, over mountains, down mountains etc?

Somebody may remark that a cyclist wouldn't last two minutes ...[text shortened]... able to take the strain.

Any views on the toughest sports, feel free to state your views.
I have to agree on this. One of my lovers in college was a semi-pro cyclist trying to go pro. Not an ounce of fat on him, and talk about stamina... oh my god...

Just my 2 cents worth... carry on guys... nothing to see here... move along... ๐Ÿ˜€

If Rugby players are so tough, why havent any made a name in the NFL? How many Rugby players are 6'5", 300 lbs, can bench 500 lbs AND run the 40 in about 4 seconds? That's just an average player in the NFL.

Stand your average NFL player next to your average Rugby player, and you would be scared for the Rugby player. Just because Rugby players are ugly and gets their faces knocked in and teeth knocked out, doesnt mean they could play in the NFL, it just means they are stupid. Evan an average NFL running back is much bigger and faster than the top rugby player. Even Rugby players wouldnt be stupid enough to tackle Shaun Alexander without pads on. Suicide.

I agree. Levy was good. Never knew he was a vegetarian though. I think Shula was a good coach, but yeah, a little overrated. Belechick (sp?) is also a great coach. He was a student of Parcells, so I'm not surprised.
Belechick is partly what helped to make Parcells so great.

No Paul Brown is. The Cleveland Browns were named after him

IF NFL players are so tough why havent they made it in Rugby?

Trust me, there are plenty of Rugby Union players who are over 200cm and could bench press a car. Alot of your big NFL players are fat. Very fat.

What, and get in a "circle-jerk" with sweaty, randy men using the excuse of grabbing at a oddly-shaped ball, to grope each other?

Dude, you're crazy. The players can't be compared.
In both sports players need to be as big, strong and fast as possible, but you can't have all of that and have stamina.

Rugby players need more stamina. These boys are strong, but they're built very tough and have great stamina.

NFL players need more strength and speed. They don't run around as much as rugby players, so they can focus more on size and strength.

End of discussion.
