Dude, you're crazy. The players can't be compared.
In both sports players need to be as big, strong and fast as possible, but you can't have all of that and have stamina.
Rugby players need more stamina. These boys are strong, but they're built very tough and have great stamina.
NFL players need more strength and speed. They don't run around as much as rugby players, so they can focus more on size and strength.
End of discussion.
But there are the Lomu's, Sailor's, Umanga's and Tuqiri's who are huge and pretty damn quick too. But all in all, i think you've nailed it..
Originally posted by impatientThere's a lot of truth in this, but rugby players endure far more through the playing of their sport than American football players.
If Rugby players are so tough, why havent any made a name in the NFL? How many Rugby players are 6'5", 300 lbs, can bench 500 lbs AND run the 40 in about 4 seconds? That's just an average player in the NFL.
Stand your average NFL player next to your average Rugby player, and you would be scared for the Rugby player. Just because Rugby players are u ...[text shortened]... n Rugby players wouldnt be stupid enough to tackle Shaun Alexander without pads on. Suicide.
When I said that they are harder I did give the wrong impression of what I meant. I'm not suggesting that they would win all or even most fist fights against American footballers. What I am saying is that they are prepared to suffer far more in the pursuit of their chosen activity.
I don't deny they are stupid either, but hard as nails on the pitch.

I have to agree on this. One of my lovers in college was a semi-pro cyclist trying to go pro. Not an ounce of fat on him, and talk about stamina... oh my god...
Just my 2 cents worth... carry on guys... nothing to see here... move along... 😀

Professional cyclists are the toughest of ALL. OK, there is a difference between the pain of endurance and the pain of impact, but how many sportsmen and women work, often at levels like 80% of their maximum HR, for up to six hours a day for three weeks, over mountains, down mountains etc?
Somebody may remark that a cyclist wouldn't last two minutes ...[text shortened]... able to take the strain.
Any views on the toughest sports, feel free to state your views.
See what those guys have to eat for breakfast...
Oh, and all those wussies out there who like wrestling? This is sport, not acting.

So I wouldn't call it acting, just glorified stuntmen.
Oh, and you call them wussies to their faces. I've got your back.

Originally posted by CrowleyHow fast do rugby players run? Or how big do they get? I know NFL Dbacks run around 4.2sec-4.4sec in a 40 about 180lbs-210lbs. I know little about rugby players.
I agree, to a degree (Ha! poetry!).
Rugby players are pretty tough guys and I think are fitter than most NFL players because rugby is much more of a 'flowing / dynamic' game than football. Rugby players need to be quicker and have more stamina than the NFL players.
BUT, the NFL boys are much bigger (linebackers?) and stronger than rugby players, because ...[text shortened]... ckled, where those NFL boys get taken out HARD! Around the neck etc. - you need protection.

Originally posted by c99uxTrue wrestling (not the Hulk Hogan stuff) takes a lot of strength and stamina. I wrestled and played football in High School. Wrestling practice was a lot tougher.

1) No Challenge and they dont want to kill people
2) No money in it because noone watches it compared to the NFL - obviously NFL is much more interesting.
None of those players you listed are fast enough to play in the NFL - speed is the difference - Rugby player can be big and tough, NFL players are big, stronger, and extremely fast. Those fat guys you speak of can beat 95% of Rugby players in a 100m.
