Nothing is 100% secure. Fort Knox isn't - as demonstrated.
Software is hacked within minutes of its release.... the hackers are brilliant..... giv'em credit.

By the way Crowls...... you been doing this?

It's like Origami but not as much fun..... especially the UNFOLDING bit! 😉

A lot of the time all you are paying for is a bundled package of programs that you can get individully for free and probably an autoupdate, so basically your paying for conveniance. Spend a little time doing sum research, go to the forum at majorgeeks.com and read through their thread on malware prevention, then make your own decesion on what you want to do. I stopped using pay programs a couple of years ago, and as with dr sranglove i have never had a problem since.

Agreed. Freebies work fine for me 🙂

Err, where is all this free software? Something appropriate for a laptop I suppose.

A link to an appropriate thread would be as good as anything.

edit: oops, spyware, not sptware. 😳
Removing Norton - GOOD idea. (I doubt it's fully gone, though ..) Norton is basically a Micros**t product. 'nuf said.

AVG is probably as good as any anti-virus on the market. And it's free.

For Spyware - try Spybot S+d. Not much good for adware, but better than most for malware (password stealers, zombies, etc.) Also free.

Or you could try Windows Defender. Costs nothing. Finds nothing. Eats resources. Maybe you can bore the damned things to death.

Just downloaded the new AVG 8 Free version, we'll see how it goes...

thats not true, adaware and spybot are both free and are excellent; you're logic makes no sense, many programmers and developers write a good program and put in on the net because they believe in free open source software.... so if they charge you £50 to buy it in your eyes it's now good so worth buying....

avg is also an excellent antivirus, norton is the worse a.v i've ever come across, it keeps the viruses away, but completely tampers with the registry and takes up a lot of processor time

Ah!
The windows firewall in Vista is one thing that M$ actually improved over the XP firewall. [which was one way only]
I would stick with that but make sure it's turned on for both ways though?

Not sure about this because im still on xp but would have thought zone-alarm would have sorted this to work on vista by now. Are you sure you have completly removed norton of your computer? Its a bitch to get rid of, and if you dont do it properly it will mess up any security you try and install. Do a search for "norton removel tool", pick out your product from the list and let it do its buisness. Then try installing zonealarm again. Also you will need to disable windows firewall before installing.

I actually did the very same thing when I tried uninstalling norton, I downloaded a program to do it for me.
I'll try installing zone alarm again anyway...
