Go with a friend, or maybe find the names of the club officers and give one a call.
I don't know anyone here who plays chess (at least not anyone who would go to a chess club). Giving someone I don't know a call is even more scary than meeting up there.

Just do it. Break the habbit, you'll thank yourself for it. Even if you just ring the chess club leader, and talk about it, i'm sure he'll be happy to have you along.

Your friend need not be a chess player. Just explain that you would feel better if they went, and maybe read a book for 2 or 3 hours. If you have one friend there it would make you not feel so surrounded by strangers.(IMHO)
I think anyone that plays online should give a chess club a try too.
The web has been the downfall of the traditional club. 😞

To be honest, the modern work schedule has a lot to do with it too. I know that my work roster is too eratic to take on any club on a regular basis, so they sometimes fall to the wayside quickly.

Well, without the web I probably wouldn't ever have started playing chess.

Asking someone who is not interested in chess to accompany me sounds rather weird. I don't think I'd want to do that to anyone.

Have you a fear of groups of people you don't know ?

The first time you've played it was online? 😲

I mostly work at "normal" times, so that wouldn't be a problem for me. Getting to the club would be a problem, though. At the moment getting to work (and from one workplace to another) is difficult enough. So even if I should decide to give it a try, it probably wouldn't happen until my foot is better.

No, but the first time I played against a person was online. The first time I played was against Chessmaster. And I got interested in the first place because of stuff I read on the internet.

Yes, social situations are difficult for me, and if I don't know anyone, it's worse. It's part of being autistic.

Interesting.

I'd played it before, but I was a little crap. My chess revival was online. If you check out my first games, you can see how much out of practice I was. It's embarassing... 😛

I'd say public forums are also social situations and you do just fine. Much better than most, I'd say.
