Yeah I agree really, but then playing out on a board can point out
blunders and that's legal. The only time I ever intended to use a
board my house-mate stopped me, saying it was unsporting, and the
maverick move I was trying went badly wrong. But then, don't they
always?

I think the situation you describe would be an instance of cheating.
There is something about the sheer processing power of programs
that makes them unfair to use in a game. The only legitimate use of
programs, in my opinion, is in the retrospective analysis of completed
games. Using programs in this fashion is interestingly analogous to
the use of archived games and the commentary upon them. In the
former, a sufficiently powerful program can come up with moves the
rationales for which require painstaking, meticulous examination to
discover. In the latter, positional and tactical principles must be
painstakingly and meticulously applied to derive a move suitable to
context.

I understand using a program in any form is not legal in
corerspondence chess.

Never want anyone to leave RHP - It is a community site and that is
what is best about it - Consider yourself part of the ever growing club
that is RHP.

PS I think you made some valid comments regarding correspondence
chess and brought the issue into the light, perhaps more
vehementally than others :o)
