I don't think I could ever be a vegetarian, but I definitely will not be buying any Australian wool products anytime soon.

I was thinking of starting a website called People Against Violence.

I'd put up a mission statement like "we are trying to stop violence" and then just put a bunch of videos of guys getting the crap beat out of them as examples of "things we're trying to stop".

I don't always agree with those types of scare tactics either but you should at least give it a look-see and form your own opinion based on the "facts" presented. After watching the video I took some time to check out "flystrike" and how it can be avoided. It seems like an easily avoidable affliction to me.

I didn't know Pink is a hippie.

No good farmer will ever knowingly let an animal suffer. Dead animals or animals in bad condition do not produce and this means less profit.
Sheep are dirty and die easily. All the farmers I know look after the stupid animals (if you've ever been close to sheep you'll understand how stupid they are) as well as humanly possible. Sometimes they die.

PETA is a bunch of alarmist tree huggers looking for sensation.

We should forward them the link to the Global Orgasm Day thread then!

I understand that sheep are "stupid" and have a herd mentality. How is that relevant? And why should I accept your assurances that ALL "good" farmers (whatever that means) are humane? Like you imply, profit is all that matters. And if all farmers have the same mentality that you do (dirty, stupid animals, etc.) then why is it far-fetched to believe that a farmer would choose profit over humane treatment and production.

Sometimes they die, you say. Well, actually, they always die. That doesn't justify these specific overtly cruel practises.

An alternate side of the debate to help decide if the video represents 100% of the australian wool industry now.

Here's an explanation of mulesing:

My beef is not in questioning the obvious pain inflicted, it's with PETA's consistent shock tactics and lack of balance.

They show nasty videos of animal cruelty in their quest to convert us to vegans and vegetarians. Just because some people have no idea where some of the stuff they buy and eat comes from, it doesn't mean PETA can advance their cause by exploiting the same animals they are purporting to protect.

Nobody disputes the fact that PETA uses shock tactics.

I don't think that the video says or even implies that all farmers treat their animals in such an inhumane way. It is just bringing to our attention of what does happen. It is suggesting that Australian wool is boycotted until the industry becomes more humane and puts humanity before profit.
If anyone is biased, I think perhaps that it is yourself.
