Windows Xp comes with a built in firewall you have to turn on to use, but it is a piece of fertilizer. Turn it off and use a good one. I use a free one called Kerio. It is OK but not the best. I can't get Zone Alarm to work properly on my system for some reason, That is why I use Kerio. I have been using AVG for virus control for a couple years or so and it is really good but I use Ewido and lavasoft for spyware and malware. They all clean things the others will leave behind.

I have Sygate free firewall - been taken over by the dreaded Norton but still seems to be working ok.
You can still get it free here...
