Maybe it's understandable [whether it is right is another question] to not inform engine users of the evidence for why they were banned but with forum bans it is downright bad manners, to put it mildly. It is also non productive as the banned person simply kno ...[text shortened]... proclamation that posts will be removed NEEDS to be done; We all already knew about that.
Hi. I am sorry you were banned.

But I think Mods have their own lives to lead.
And dont want to fill their free time issuing explainations every time someone demands one.

If a Mod replied to someones request as to why they were being banned. I am sure the Mod would end up in a lenghty argument with somone who was not worthy of the time.

All the moderator has to do is give a reference to the post(s) that the moderator found inappropriate. (S)he doesn't have to get into lengthy discussions or explain him/herself.

Exactly!

You can find out who the "current" mods are by going to the site map page at the bottom of this page and going to the comunity/volunteers section.

And you think that no-one would take up from there, calling for justifcation?

Sure, but then the moderators doesn't have to respond. If you feel really badly treated, you can start a thread on the subject when the ban has been lifted. And if you feel really, really badly treated, you can stop paying for the site and find some other chess-site that will have you. I'm sure there's tons of chess communities out there.

In which case they should be prepared to justify what they do.
We are expected to be accountable for our actions so why aren't they?

I would still like to know why I was banned even now the ban has finished.

Who says they're not accountable? And why do you think they have to be accountable to you?

And this is where I have a problem with non-subs. In all other ways I see non-subs as equal contributors to the site, but it wrecks my head seeing non-subs clamouring for changes to be made to the site when they aren't willing to pay for the work to be done, especially when its blatantly obvious that they can afford the $30, as I'm sure most doctors could.

This is exactly the case.

An automated message may appear in the future, but there will be no right to reply.

A. Because what has been done was done to me.

And I'm not clamouring for changes anyway, I just want to know why things happened.
If I want to remain as non sub scum that should be up to me......I feel it would be a betrayal of my fellow underlings if I succumbed to the pressure to subscribe at present.

Some Doctors have many financial commitments and are underpaid too.

Do you mean an automated message referring the banned person to the post/thread in question?
As you know, there is already an automated message saying one is banned until such and such a date.

I am in the same situation as Dr Strangelove. I have had a lengthy discussion with one of the moderators, and I am grateful he took his time for that, but he was not the one who banned us, so the discussion hasn't really been leading anywhere, and I still don't know what rule I may have violated. My best guess is that it was a rule which didn't exist at that time (the rule about replying to something deemed inappropriate), plus a different view on what's inappropriate (using Russ' guideline, I wouldn't have had any problem reading the article this seems to be about to my mother, and unlike shavixmir I would never use "bad language" in the presence of my mother). I have also been advised to use trial and error to find out what's allowed as there doesn't seem to be any other way, even though I had been told before that it's not a good idea to test the mods or robomod. So basically, bans seem to be seen (at least by this moderator) as something unavoidable and unpredictable. And since there won't be an explanation for them, you can't even learn from them. So I wonder if there's actually anything positive coming out of them? I can understand that bans are used in cases where people deliberately and repeatedly violate the rules. But I can't see how they are meaningful and useful in cases where someone does an offence once out of ignorance (for example because some words which are considered inappropriate in one country are considered harmless in another one), and it would be enough to tell the person "this is not allowed" to stop it. It wouldn't be much work for the moderators to give such a short explanation, and it would give them less work in the future.

I don't think this is in the best interest of the site. A public discussion will always lead to more people getting upset, and it may lead to a flame war which will again cause the moderators extra work. It's also not in my own interest because it might lead to another ban (at this point, I am willing to risk it).

I have been considering it, but it would be awfully hard to leave this site. 🙁

Well, I think that if I ever get banned for an unknown reason (the moderator unable to point to an even remotely offensive use of language), I would be pi... (uhm, can I write that word?..) as a f... (now, I know I can't type that word...) up baboon, and raise some h... 😞

In other words, you would be very angry and would use some power words that are considered as bad language.😛
