I believe there are 4 kinds of people that get tattoos:

1. Military....usually Navy/Marines, some Army, almost zero Air Force. Probably the most respectable reason to have one.

2. Biker/white trash types.

3.Prison tattoos. Ugh...enough said. Just disgusting.

4. Upwardly mobile yuppies who are smart and educated enough to know better, but want to impress everyone with what a hip, cool, free-thinking rebel they are. They are the worst.

Did I miss a category?

YES! I had forgotten about them. They make me sick too. I like it when I see one who's 30 year old tattoo has turned all black/dark green and purple, looks very sexy.

I read that Brittany Spears got a Japanese character tattoo that she was told meant "exotic and unique", later a Japanese massuese saw it and started laughing, told Britany that it's closest translation to English was "WEIRD/STRANGE". Brittany cried, boo-hoo.
True story.

Don't forget the ol' dolphin jumping over the rainbow tattoo. A big favourite amongst hippy broads from the nineties.

there's no 'w' in devanagari...

I don't really get why people get tattoos they don't understand though. that's just stupid. if you're going to get something inked into your skin, get something you have a personal contact to. a thing that means something to you. also getting anything written in devanagari, chinese etc. will require quite a lot of personal weight to not make you appear a shallow idiot. regardless of the content of that text.

I mean, if you're an old indian guru with a wise phrase inked on your skin in devanagari, it would speak of commitment, culture and spirituality. but if you're a hollywood bimbo with the same exact tattoo, it's a neon sign of being stupid and superficial.

Actually, some of the finest tattooing being done anywhere is done in prisons, by prisoners. There's a lot of crap done there too, but I thought you might want to know your sweeping generalization doesn't reflect reality entirely.

Wasn't refering to the quality of the work, but of the person's reason for getting it.

The tramp stamp. Often sported by aficionados of the visible thong and muffin top looks.

I'm not sure what you mean. What if a prisoner gets a tattoo to remind them of their human dignity? It happens you know.

I was under the impression prison tat's were to signify a gang affiliation, not their human dignity. What's dignified about getting a hot ink pen injected into your skin by another felon?

Prison is an exceedingly complex environment where emotions run the full range and the symbolism of their expression isn't confined to gang identification.

Initially you mentioneed your disgust at prison tattoos and I understand where you're coming from on that count. I wanted to point out that sometimes beneath the all the piles of sh !t there are moments of sanity that are depicted artfully and tastefully too.
