That reminds me of the first time I went to Norway. I had learned to say "I don't speak Norwegian" in Norwegian, but little else. I visited someone who had a 2 y.o. son. The kid was very annoyed that we were talking English all the time. So I explained to him in Norwegian that I don't speak Norwegian. After that he was even more convinced that I was able to talk Norwegian and just didn't want to. After all, it doesn't make much sense to say "I don't speak ..." in the language you supposedly don't speak.
