@sonhouse

Having seen live Beck, Page, Clapton, Knopfler, Zappa, Jerry Garcia, Dickey Betts, my favorite is Beck. By far the most versatile of all of them.

I read that Hendrix could neither read nor write music. He is said to have envisioned the sounds he wished to create then experimented with them until he got the sound he wanted. That seems like genius to me.
Wow! Must take a read on him.

What about Robert Johnson?

What about B.B. King?

Still, these folks are blues, not rock.
Saw BB King at Newcastle City hall and yes he was very good its just he cant sing and play at the same time, he cant play any chords or rythmn, he just lays down a few licks. Robert Johnson was old school, good in his day but no match for more modern guitarists, Jimi for me was a great showman but a bit of a 1 trick pony on guitar.....just my point of view

If sticking to "rock" music, (there's so much fusion and overlap these days)...I'd add Keith Richards, Joe Perry and Dave Stewart to the list.

Oh, another one...

Muddy Waters
I met Muddy Waters at a Smithsonian folk fest back a few decades. Nice guy. I also met Libba Cotton who fed me a chicken dinnerπŸ˜‰ She had a lot of people try to get her to play normal right hand on picking and left hand on frets including me to no avail. She was Libba Cotton and had her own unique style.
My guitar teach was Backwards Sam Firk, AKA Mike Stewart, incredible virtuoso on country blues. RIP now.

I go for Jeff Beck followed by Hendricks and Eric Clapton. Any thoughts? Jeff beck does not use a pick, and is a virtuoso of the whammy bar, a true rock and jazz virtuoso.
I agree with Beck and Clapton but I always thought Hendrix was more hype than substance.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Mike Campbell of the Heartbreakers.
