Anyone any thoughts on this topic? Imagine by John Lennon comes to mind for me.

Two of us - The beatles (although the version on the 'I am Sam' album is best...either of the two)

Thunder road - Springsteen (just childhood memories)

Murder in the red barn - Tom Waits

Bridge over troubled water - Simon and Garfunkel (this is probably my absolute favourite qua lyrics, music, timing, everything).

Joe Cocker-N'Oubliez Jamais.

and shavi... I've always wondered: what genre is Tom Waits? Any comparisons I'd know? 😀

Maybe Nick Cave (as in alternativness)
Springsteen, Rod Stewart and The Pogues have all covered his songs very succesfully.

He's a class apart though. Very difficult to compare him to anything.
Basically VERY alternative jazz, blues and folk. I think.

In terms of straight up music, it could be the 3rd movement of Bach's 6th Brandenburg Concerto, or 'Ascendenteque Modulationis' from his Musical Offering. It could be Chopin's Nocturne in E flat as well, and many others.

If we're talking songs though, I have a harder time giving a straight answer, but Leonard Cohen's 'A Bunch of Lonesome Heroes', Bob Dylan's 'One More Cup of Coffee' and Brooker and Reid's 'Grand Hotel' have all had my attention of late.

Curiosity got the better of me, I downloaded a song called "Alice" by him... like it ok so far, seems to be the kind of music you have to listen to often to love it 🙂

Alice is very heavy.

Download:

- Better off without a wife
- Downtown train
- Murder in a red barn
- In the neighbourhood

That'll give you a good impression of his music.

I like A Perfect Circle, but I think their version sucks. I think they were trying to make the lyrics more ironic and poignant by making it scary sounding, but I hate the arrangement.

My favorite song right now is "Makes No Difference" by The Band. A tear-jerking confessional about lost love and yearning.

How about "Heroes" by David Bowie, the 7 minute version which is on the album of same name.

You've done well. Props and raisin pie for you, Shavixmir.

Waits is one heck of a painter.
