Blood on the Chess Board
Eight pawns, two bishops, knights and rooks
Surround their king and queen
Across the board - a mirrored sight
Just four ranks lie between
There's going to be a battle
Of this, all here are sure
The diplomats have tried and failed
So now they go to war
Two pawns go forth
Then knights engage
The bishops join the fray
Supporting pawns
Come forward now
To keep their foe at bay
Thrust and parry
To and fro
A tense and deadly dance
Both sides castle
Kings kept safe
But one side see it's chance!
A queen that joined the fight too soon
Is chased and trapped and lost...
For white this is a bitter blow
One knight, for black, the cost
Now black goes on the rampage
On top, they strive to swap
Their queen commands the action
As she stands before her king
There is no doubt, her minions shout,
For our lady we will win!
But deep within the white defense
A rook has slyly moved
And when the pawn, that blocked it, takes
It's position is improved
The queen is pinned so takes the rook
The white king takes her life
Whilst crying to the heavens,
"This is for you, dear wife!"
Then black, still reeling from the shock
Makes moves that cost it dear
And suddenly the outcome
Becomes no longer clear
Pieces fall
The pawns press on
To be a queen, their goal
White's pawns
With better structure
On black they take their toll
Its pieces die to stop them
But the new queen's just delayed
The black king finds a corner
Defeated and afraid
Now white is really showing off
With two more queens created
But what a gaff, the black king laughs
As he finds that he's stalemated!

I did my speech at my wedding in rhyme and included lots of the
