When it's your move, there is an option to the right of the game board, 'Message opponent.'

The message is sent when you make your move.

IN GAME MESSAGES

If you want to communicate with your opponent within a game, you can do so my including your message with your move. To do that just go to the right side of the board. Below the 'submit move' button you will see a 'message opponent' link. Click that and type your message in the text box and when done click 'OK' at the bottom of the box. It isn't actually sent yet. Now you must go back and make your next move. You should now see your message above the board. You can still go back and edit it at this point. Once the message is as you want it and you have made your move on the board, go back and click the submit move button and the message will be sent along with your move. Your opponent should see it when they next log on and check the game.

PERSONAL MESSAGES

You can also send a personal message to any member at any time. To do that, first click their username. This will open their profile page. Look on the left side and you will see a message link. Click that and you will be able to compose a message and send it. You can review your sent and received messages by clicking the message icon which is at the top of the page by the right side. The icon will change color on your page whenever you have a message.

The ferals (usually male) who pick on newbie females remind me of the sexist males who drove women out of their real-world chess clubs with insults in the 1970s. The world's moved on, guys.

Others have explained how to chat during a game. Be warned though, when your opponent says you just made a great move, it's a ruse. It probably means you are about to fall into a trap.
