Greatest TV detective of all time - or what?

Inspector Morse was better though the last few were not up to standard.

Morse was good, but you can't argue against Columbo's staying power. Also Columbo is a lot more likely to make you laugh 🙄

I have always enjoyed Columbo, and still watch reruns from time to time. The premise always seems to be the same in each show:

The murder is always committed by a respected and wealthy member of society. The murderer always graciously offers to help Columbo with the investigation in the beginning, smug in their conceit that they've committed the perfect crime, and dismissive of Columbo's apparent ineptness. However, as Columbo draws the noose tighter, they become more irritated and argumentative. Inevitably, they will attempt some last minute scheme to cover up a flaw in their alibi, which usually leads to their doom. Outwitted by Columbo in the end, they always confess and agree to be led away to jail.

The success of the show indicates that the formula must work pretty well, but it would be nice if they threw in a trailer park prostitute murder or something once in a while, just to keep it from becoming too repetitive.

i get my detective kicks out of marnum, PI-they're dress senses are awful, and they all have moustaches!!! even some of the women...(o.k., so it was a guy dressed as a woman, but yeah...😛). plus-what can be wrong with a program where the main characted wears hotpants??? 😵

Jim Rockford could kick Columbo's butt any day!

The main man from the terribly quaint and "nice" program called 'Due South', namely Constable Benton Fraser, Royal Candian Mounted Police. Nay, you don't understand, I wanted to *be* that man.

Sheesh I loved that program!

I'm particularly fond of Perot, but I have to give props to Columbo.

I have to agree, that the basic premise of the show is always the same. However I think this is the shows greatest stength...

Ok, Columbo is the constant (***) and you know Falk is going to deliver. What is great are the performances from the main suspects and how they react to Columbo's ramblings. This is why the show is not repetative.

One of my personal favorite episodes involves the murder at the 'IQ' club and Columbo's deductions on how the muder was commited - great.

(***) Well ok, there was that guy with the mustache who turned up a few times I suppose 🙂

Frank Pembleton was the best. Followed by Dan Tanna and Spenser for Hire, not necessarily in that order.

I've just done a poll of the office.

Columbo definitely wins, followed closely by Quincy...TJ Hooker came last, although I'm not sure he should even be in this category.
