Recently bought myself a new smart phone and it had a handy book reader app with it. There's a handful of books that come pre-loaded, one of which is the old classic Bram Stoker novel Count Dracula. I love the Dracula story and have seen many of the film and TV adaptations. The book never really appealed but i started reading it the other night and now can't put it down. What a great read! The first section with Jonathan Harkers diary is truly chilling. This is testament to Stokers writing skill as hardly anything actually happens. No gore, no deaths, no injuries. mainly just conversation between Harker and the Count. The scene is simply set and your imagination does all the work.
I'll be finished within a week or two and i'll be on the lookout for some similar gripping suspense/ horror.
Any reccomendations?

Any of the novels of Stephen King
Originally posted by divegeesterI actually have a copy of this book, I've no idea how well it sold but I found it when helping clear my grandparents home in the early 90's. It's very well written and gives good insight as to the fears Churchill, and many others in and outside government, felt due to the inadequate military resources the UK could muster in response to the perceived German threat through massive rearmaments.
While England Slept next for you then. There's either a Churchill or a Chamberlain in each of us.
Of course there is no mention of the JF Kennedy thesis, 'Why England Slept'..I believe a few much later copies made reference to such and gave an idea the loss of his pilot brother, killed in WWII, may have influenced such.
These electronic book readers on the market are not
realising their full potential.
If it has a horror story in it's package then unknown to the reader,
on a pre-determined really scary page, if it has been 'open' for
over 30 seconds so the reader is well into the story.
A face suddenly appears and shouts "BOO!".
Originally posted by TalismanNot a suspense in the strictest sense, but Colleen McCullough's Masters of Rome series is gripping, well/eruditely written, and hard to put down! Eight volumes each over 1000 pages!
