how many pixels would it take to produce good quality pictures? is 1.2 Mega Pixels resolution, and 1280x960 pixels decent? 😛

For website graphics, that is fine - but not for printing.

Look at 3 mega pixel minimum.

I got a Minolta dimage XT. 3.2 mega pixels and prints great photos up to 10"x8" at the second best quality setting at 2048x1536. Crappy flash if your going to be taking a lot of indoors photos, but for outdoors, its class.

Check out http://community.webshots.com/user/dlyne100 for some samples.

You'd probably get a good camera on ebay for £100.

Google the model for reviews b4 u bid though.

A flash is fairly important. Without one you won't be able to take pics of your pissed friends.

It looks alright, but its got no optical zoom, which basically means its got no zoom. Digital zoom is pretty much unworkable in my experience.

If you want to print pictures you're easily looking at 3.1 mega pixels at least.

Look for optic zoom (or mm zoom on the better cameras). Digital zoom just gets you closer to the pixels, not the object. I seriously don't know why they bother putting that on cameras.

Check the lense. Just because you have 3.1 mega pixels, doesn't mean the lense is going to be sharp. Some cheap cameras (like mine, which was 200 euros) have really good lenses. Mine's got a pentax lense.
If you don't know much about lenses (like me) go for a digi-cam from a well known 'normal' camera firm. If they've got good experience making normal cameras, then they're generally pretty good with the lenses too.

Once you've seen some cameras you like, check them out on the internet first. You've got lots of sites which have people's feedback on the cameras they've bought. If a majority of them say it's good, then you've got a higher chance of getting something that's good.

You should get an Olympus C-740. It's a 3.2 megapixel camera with a 10x optical zoom. Those are the only two characteristics you need to worry about, everything else is a waste of time. It see it advertised for $349.
