Yes, the Scots and the Irish are one, no question my friend, my mother was Irish protestant, my father Scottish catholic, his entire family boycotted his wedding because of this, he never set foot in a chapel afterwards in his entire life, there is no shame in what we were born, this is what makes prejudice in any form so ludicrous, people cannot help what they were born, but once we realize the folly of our prejudice, that we have inherited certain values, ideas, histories, traditions, culture call it what you like, we must dispense with these, what is the shame of Dixie? America seems to me still to be one of the most racially conscious and segregated nations on earth, the civil war has changed nothing! it is to those southern values of gentlemanliness, civility, etiquette and mannerliness that I appeal, they used to be evident in the English but alas are now lost! now I have said too much, something that was tounge in cheek has taken on a more sombre tone.

So it was in fact simply "in jest"...

bah humbug, i had anticipated that the Americanoes would have been much more patriotic, that they would have taken the bait, readily defended their heritage, perhaps I am missing something, do they care? does it matter who rules their country, King George or the president? Alas they have just confirmed my worst fears that Little houses on prairies no longer exist, yes it was said in jest, perhaps irresponsibly, definitely in an uniformed manner, but I still want a Dixie flag! its like the Scottish saltire, only it has stars on it and is a groovy orange colour.

Patriotic? You said "those southern values of gentlemanliness, civility, etiquette and mannerliness" and I had to stop choking first. There's nothing gentlemanly about buying and owning people because you're too lazy to do your own work. There's not much civility in slavery itself, let alone what was done to the slaves by these people you admire. You want a dixie flag? Get one. You want respect? Get a different flag.

As a Lynard Skynard fan, i find that opinion of the Confederate flag slightly blinkered.

Let's ban the Zimbabwean flag, or the Rwandan flag while you're at it...or the British flag......or the French.....or the....Is there a country that HASN'T endorsed slaverly at one time or another ?.

this site dosent have a Dixie flag, maybe i should contact the moderators to have them set it up, but if it did have i would definitely get one. respect ? i have a relatively small amount of self respect why should I crave respect from others ? are you trying to say that there was nothing good in the south? to take such a view would be tantamount to saying there is nothing good in Indian culture because of the injustice of the caste system, there is nothing good in Irish culture because of the religious prejudice, there is nothing good in German culture because of the holocaust, terrible things are perpetrated daily, no one is denying, so the south must hide in shame forevermore, I think not! zing what is that?

Perhaps the original post was 'in jest' or perhaps that is an attempt to cover one's behind. I would like to address your post which paints all southerners as slave owners or supporters. If you believe this, you are uninformed. If you don't, then you are stereotyping large numbers of decent people. There are gentlemen and gentlewomen in the south and elsewhere. The battle flag of the Confederate States was not a symbol of racism when it was first flown and is not now, although some really sorry folk wave it about from time to time.

Take some time to study the history of the period. I'll bet you will be surprised at the facts.

Peace,

Jeb

How many Northerners owned slaves? Better question how many Southerners didn't own slaves? I seem to have read that slaves were sold up North and shipped South. My ancestors never owned a slave. To tell you the truth I'm really getting tired of the slavery issue. I mean it's been over 150 years since Lincoln freed them. No one is alive that either was a slave or a slave owner. Why not bitch at the Romans or Greeks? They owned slaves also.

He was pro-Union and probably personally against slavery, but let pragmatism color his judgment during the war. At one point he said that he would preserve the Union if it meant freeing no slave or if it meant freeing all of them. The Emancipation Proclamation was clearly a political and a military act.
