Do you ever feel sorry for your opponent?

Usually when I play I always want to win.

But sometimes I feel sorry for my losing opponent and I even have thoughts of hanging a piece to make it a draw or even worse just blundering the win away.

With online chess it only happens once in awhile but in real tournaments it happens a lot.

Anybody else think like this sometimes?

Kinda... OTB for sure with close friend or relative. Next, here with lower rated players I'm enjoying a chat with.

Only if there is a big difference in the rating, with me being the higher rated. Then I will try to make the game last.

Other than that, your opponent is out to beat you.

"Do unto others, before they do unto you." 😉

...i play poorly on purpose so as to give my humanity it's widest opportunity to make others feel good...

Never. If you are playing across from me, you are there for a reason, which makes you subject to complete and total annihilation. No mercy.
Btw. Your opponent actually benefits more from a loss than a cheap win or draw.

No way.

"In chess you have to be ready to kill people"

I think that is from a GM

Maybe chess isn't for you?

Interesting ambivalence and sensitivity, 500. Always related to the line Robert Frost wrote, "I run with the hound but die with the hare."

noo..500 has inconsistency...he said he only SOMETIMES feels bad so that means quite clearly that othertimes ( which by percentage could be 96 percent ) he feels perfectly ruthless and uncaring.....i think you are getting to old to pretend that you can still think gramps.
