I just got my license recently (1.5 years) but forget the exact rules already.
At 15 1/2 (exactly) a citizen (not sure of immigrants here) is elligible for their temporary license - a written test has to be passed. After passing this written test the future driver receives a temporary ID. The future driver must log 50 hours (including 10 at night) while driving with a person over 21 - in fact it may be guardian only. The future driver also MUST attend 21 (something like that) hours of driving classes and MUST complete 8 hours of in cars (4 2 hour driving sessions with a certified instructor). After all of this has been complete and the future driver is 16 he or she may take their test. 🙂
It's too easy, we should have less drivers like Ireland tbh, because like I've said before - women can't drive. 😵

The waiting time for my driving test when i applied was 57 weeks, that has been dropped due to a major government initiative, so the numbers of people waiting for their test will be lower now. In the 80's the Irish government made the bold step of issuing full licences to anyone waiting for a resit in the republic to try to cut the waiting list. . .ask Rags about that.
