In a (tournament)game with eltuco I had the following conversation:

http://www.redhotpawn.com/core/playchess.php?gameid=564493
47 White hey Quirine! you move once a day only when you are winning?...
47 Black no, only when I think my opponent uses a chessprogram against me.
48 White he he, every body is here using programs, especially top players. I use this site to learn openings (I use books for that) and after that normally I continue playing with my brain. But when I have a game totally won, like this (your opening was pretty bad) I use sometimes a program (but not always) so I can see the right tactic... Iam playing normal chess and for this site i dont habe time to spend in dummy tactics. When i consider that the match is strategically won, if i want, i use a computer...your strategie to hold your rating is very good, but good players (and educated ones) resign at time when the game is over...

To clarify the first 2 comments:
After I became in a lost position and I had no hope of recovering I began to slow down the game drastically.

In normal circumstances I would never do that, I just resign or play a few needless moves and then resign.
But I thought it strange that eltuco played so well against me. I already lost the other game. He was playing very good against seadevil as well. No problem so far but I saw some of his losses in which he showed to be a not so good player to beat me. So to me it looked like he used a program...

The conversation shows I'm right.
Will he be banned from this site?

He should be but truth be told I've come across so many program users on here dont even really care anymore. I just let clan leaders know not to put me in matches against them and also drop from any tournaments when I see them, why i dropped from 2 of the 3 open tournaments cause ran across a new rhp player who is gonna let his progam try to win for him, though hoping the high rated players whoop engine butt. Tempted to name some names of players but I too tired to remember the names right now, maybe another day i'll burst some bubbles. Hope eltuco gets banned, that'll be one less program user atleast.

I dont get it. How is it fun to let a program beat your opponents. What a waste of time. I mean its one thing to do it in an unrated match where your opponent understands that youre trying learn, but in rated game that is pathetic. I may not enjoy my sucky rating, but at least its truthful (not counting time outs). I just dont get it.

some people have nothing better to do with their lives than let a program play chess for them. Maybe they think they will get money or something from the site for having a high rating lol.

The mind boggles.

Why would athletes take drugs to win? (I presume pressure)
Why would chess players use computers to win?

It's not like you are really winning, is it?

Where's me drugs, I can't handle this (and believe me, these are NOT performance enhancing drugs)

You were right to post this conversation-- you might want to bring it to Russ's attention via feedback also. He should certainly be permanently banned.

i also know of some nice computerbuttkicking games ;-) (and hundreds of computer-kicking-human-butt games)

i think this problem is just like the olympics,

and in both cases i think the solution is a split:

the computers/drugusers need to be set free to openly do their best.

the computerfree/drugfree needs to be a separate category - yet they can still train against each other.

the olympics and rhp will both have to let the "cheats" compete openly.
then only just a very few steath-cheats will try to slip through into the old-style category - they will mostly stand out like a sore thumb.

the big money and interest will be in the open no-holds-barred category.

I am always a tad suspicious when I see a graph like eltuco's, such a steep curve with so few losses. I know we have some great players here, but when I started at this site, over a year ago now, there were only a handful of 2000+ rated players in the top 10, now the top 40 are all 2000+?!

I think that it would be unfair to suggest that some of the top players might be using programs in their games. RHP is still a fairly young site (3 years? ....not sure). The overall standard is bound to improve, as these guys play and are winning more games, probably to a point and then level out. All the top players have suffered losses at some point.

I wasn't suggesting that everybody rated over 2000+ was getting help from their PCs, all I was saying was that there seems to be a huge amount of 2000+ players all of a sudden. Maybe it's just sour grapes on my part cos I never seem to be able to beat them! 😵

I think this may be due to the increased membership on RHP. I don't have any figures, but imagine that it's increasing as if you look at the game ID number nowadays, it's moving very fast.

It would be interesting to see if the proportion of 2000+ rated players has increased.

I believe anyone rated over 2000 would beat a computer relatively easily, correspondence style. Feivel, rated just under 2100 (and, incidentally no longer in the top 20) mauled a computer engine not long ago. I'm not really sure what rating a computer engine could achieve, but I think we can safely say the top 20 are legitimate players. 😉

I don't think we can tell much either from an absolute rating (e.g., 2000) or from a ranking (e.g., top 500). The top players will probably continue to put distance between themselves and the rest of us and if nothing else, sheer numbers of new players will drive down the ranking of some constant rating. Possibly more informative might be ratings that correspond to percentiles. I don't really have much in the way of data for this, but I do recall that 4 or 5 months ago the 90th %ile (i.e., the rating that would put you into the top 10% of the active players) was 1565. Right now, it's 1581. Whether that 16 point climb is statistically significant, I have no clue. Back then, there were about 3600 players in the player table; now there are 4149.

It seems that having added about 500 players should not have driven 1420 down from #500 to #999, but I couldn't say. My highest ranking (very short-lived 🙁 ) was #205 at a rating of 1654 back in June. Now 1654 puts ShallowBlue (I've always liked that name) at #270. That's an increase of 65 players in the >1654 range in the last 3 months. That seems like quite a few too, so 500 in the >1420 range since (May?) seems more plausible.

I'm sure it would be possible to collect statistics on this, but somehow, it seems like work. 😕

Best Regards,
Paul
