Dark Star - I think it is John Carpenter's first movie. Check out the cast too.

Don't forget Zardos with Sean Connery.
Also THX1138.
I really loved the soundtrack to Silent Running. Remember who the star was and who did the sound track?
ok, 5th element πŸ™‚.

Bruce Dern was the star in Silent Running, dunno about the soundtrack, i was a little kid back then.

Another great movie!

These are all great suggestions although I have already seen most of them. Have not seen Event Horizon or the Russian version of Solaris. Sounds like those two are on my "to see" list now. Three other movies that I thought of were as follows:

Dune (the Scif Fi channel version with William Hurt) The other version with Sting was verrrrrrrrry bad.

Dark City (Kiefer Sutherland is awesome in anything)

Forbidden Planet (Cheesy effects but thought provoking at the end)

For it's time, The Forbidden Planet was very good. Also, I liked the first War of the Worlds. The was this film about spaceships carrying some of the remaining plant and tree life from Planet Earth. The was a guy on one ship who felt the the plant and tree life needed to be preserved no matter what the cost. However, I cannot remember the name of it.

But I wanted to get input from everyone about a favorite science fiction/fantasy film that is more obscure yet still good. What got me going was I just saw a strange film called "Avalon." At first it was dull but then the combination of eerie photography and aweso ...[text shortened]... cellent! Does anybody out there have a favorite obscure sci fi film they can recommend to me?
I like attack of the killer bees, thats always a good one, and of course Ice, that is cool. It shows brute force and how desperate people get. and it shows what jerks people can be. i love both of these sci fi movies.
