i can't believe no-one has mentioned Dark City.

City of Lost Children was pretty good too.

also check out Fantastic Planet (La Planete Sauvage), a French sci-fi animation from 1973 - freaky stuff!

I can't believe no one has mentioned Fahrenheit 451.

Ray Bradbury is the master.

yeah, they should make more of his stuff into films. i guess, though, he was more known for short stories than novels.

Liked the book, but I wasn't crazy about the film.

Pitch Black and Westworld (which have already been mentioned) are two very good ones. But my fave would be John Carpenter's version of The Thing.

I liked Contact even though it did have Matthew McConaughey in it. Jodie Foster was good.

Videodrome and Phantasm.
I would add The Mist--it could be considered horror, but there's enough parallel universe and military scientists mucking around with mother nature to give it some sci-fi cred.

I thought it was great because it had Jodie Foster as the main scientist and McConaughey was just there for eye candy. 😛

i've never been a fan of his, but i recently watched a horror movie called Frailty with him in it with Bill Paxton, and they were both quite good. an axe murdering serial killer, religious fundamentalism, a rose garden - all good stuff!

I would consider The Mist as horror, but it was a very good movie. Perhaps the best screen adaptation of a Stephen King story ever.
