Nah, it's a very good storyline, actually. Not *just* a Western at all. In fact, I thought it could have been any time in history and still translated the meaningfulness very well....compassion, honor and redemption.

A think a part of him was, yes. The other part (without giving up the movie here) was just the scoundrel who figured he'd get out of another mess in time.

But as the film drew to an end, he gets more and more chances if he had really wanted - it was almost like he had too much respect for christian bales commitment to bringing him to justice.

You also might enjoy the original version (1957) with Glenn Ford and Van Heflin.. same psychological tension, less violence, different ending. And you're right, it's more than a western.
