I am pretty frusterated at the way I cannot play higher rated people simply because they take for granted I can't play and win. Now, I understand that 1. they do not improve from games with lower rated people, and 2. it is not their fault they do not want to play us lower ratings. However, I think it is simply not fair that newcomers cannot play the higher rating people. We newcomers are rated by our first few games, and if we play extremly well but can't play higher rated people, we may take a longer time to get to what our real rating should be. I suggest that newcomers can play anyone, and after they are rated their restrictions should go into effect.

These parameters are left up to each individual player. A player has the right to restrict ratings challenges. That being said, there are many players that will accept challenges from lower-rated players.

Another restriction that players unofficially adhere to is to not accept challenges from players that are not subscribers, more commonly known as pawn stars.

Its the same for everybody when you start, Once you have been here a while & your rating points go up then higher rated players will happily play you. Also note you are lucky under the current system of provisional ratings, as you can jump up a few hundred points in one game, before it was a slow old climb.

Make some friends, have more than 16 moves made... and others will play you.

It is a bit early to complain, since you are not even rated or finished a single game.

Relax, enjoy the site. Once you been around a bit more and more people will play you.

I understand your plight because I was in the same situation when I joined up a couple months ago. However, there is a very good reason for an established player not to play a new person! Let me give you one of my examples:

I played a new guy who goes by El Bruto. He came in with a provisional rating of 1200, just like the rest of us do. However, I had to play him in a clan match and he won the first 18 out of 19 games he played! I was extremely lucky to squeak out a draw against him - yes I was the only player (at the time) who didn't lose to him. Now I see another strong A player has managed to draw against him as El Bruto's wins continue to climb.

Well, a lot of players like myself are established players with USCF and we bounce between class A and Expert. So when we start out here rated at 1200 and spend months getting our rating up to where it belongs who wants to take a chance on a new person, who for all we know, may be using Fritz 8.0 to play his games!?

Your second statement is a little misleading.

It's true that SOME paying members will not play against a non-subscriber, but to say that this is a "restriction that players unofficially adhere to" is just not true.

I'm a subscriber, and I will play whoever takes up one of my 'open invite' games. I am not concerned with their membership status or their current rating.

One reason that the site offers a free membership is to allow new members to enjoy some of the benefits of the RHP community, and encourage them to become subscribers. Refusing to play non-subscribers does not promote very much good will, in my opinion.

I'm like elvendreamgirl - I take and lose to all levels.

abejnood perhaps you should put some offers out there, just looking to play.

I play some people regularly (and lose to them regularly) but I enjoy the challenge and every now and then, I win one.

Maybe I overreacted. I guess you are right, maybe I should wait before complaining๐Ÿ˜‰.

Anyhow, thanks for all your support. Hope to see you around!

You are correct. I should have added the qualifier many. I do see this mentioned in quite a number of profiles, but not all.

Well, just for the sake of it, now that I 've been here a while, I can complain.

Why can't I play the top members? Not to win, just to learn. It's not fair!

Thats Life.

If you want to play higher rated players then join all the tourneys that have no ratings restriction. That way you will get to play many people rated 1700+

They probably saw you play the exchange variation of the french defense and figured you'd bore them to death ๐Ÿ˜›

EDIT: On a more helpful tip;

1. A 2000+ players rating increases 0 points playing sub 1400.

2. You could try challenging them to a CLAN game, then they stand to gain something.

3. Tournaments has already been said...

4. Start beating 1700's first!! If you beat a few of them, you'll be playing 2000+ in no time!
