I think they're going to find it difficult to get their hands on the Jules Rimet trophy.
The JulesRimet cup was gifted to Brazil as a reward for winning the championship for the third time in 1970,then the cup was changed with the actual one (italian designed),the FIFA World cup.
Originally posted by RavelloI know, but I'm rather fond of naming it the Jules Rimet trophy, despite it not being strictly correct 🙂

Hmm, there are several reasons why a given country won't win it, ranging from tactical mistakes to player availability to a difficult draw to underperformance on the day to bad luck and so on. That the manager made some indiscrete, crass but ultimately insignificant comments after being entrapped by a newspaper some months before kick-off aint really something that will have any affect on England's chances come World Cup time.
What's the feeling in the Italian newspapers re: the Azzuri's chances? Confident?

It was really stupid that tabloids organized such thing.
Regarding Italy I don't say much because I'm scaramantic, but the team is one of the strongest of the last twenty years, the same goes for reporters here, they fly low because they know Azzurri have a big fat chance.

He's a philandering, unfaithful, at-times-blinkered, at-times-baffling loose-lipped person, but he's not stupid. He's been in football some 30 years. It's been his life. I just don't buy the fact that he'll lack a lot of motivation. If anything he should be even more motivated, knowing it's his last chance to win a major tournament with England, and perhaps his last good chance of winning a major tournament with any national side. The prestige, the honorary knighthood, the praise from an entire nation that's not your own... I'm no great fan of his, but he'll be motivated all right. It'll be motivation in his own mild-mannered, quiet, understated, frustrating way, but he'll be well up for it.

Then you know about soccer as much as I know about cricket.
England have very little chance of winning. Beckham, Owen and Rooney are all some of the most over-rated players in the soccer world. Hardly no English players have been succesful in leagues other than their own. And well, the EPL is the Spanish and Italian retirement league.
I think Italy have a great chance. They have one of the worlds best defence and have had for a very long time, and a very potent attack. Looking very strong.
Australia as underdogs. We beat Uruguay to get here, and we beat a full strength England 3-0 last time we played.
Holland might do well if they don't choke (again).

I don't think they do, they just hold the view that having too many spots for europe is bad for world football, which I agree with. Allowing teams like Trinidad & Tobago and Togo in the World Cup helps improve the football there.
The only problem with this, however, is that it means the weak nations from Asia and North and Central America get their cha ...[text shortened]... ance, as they cannot qualify because of the sheer amount of good footballing nations in Europe.
With my original post saying every team is just as strong as England I was making fun of England. Simply because soooo many people (especially english people) say "yeah, England's got a really strong team etc etc, probably the best... but they'll probably screw up anyway."
Originally posted by EsotericErr, Michael Owen has scored 35 goals in 70 international appearances. That record at the highest level is comparable with virtually any other striker in world football. Overrated? You sure? Wayne Rooney is regarded by a large number of people as the best player in the world for his age, and repeatedly carries the Manchester United and England teams almost single handedly. Do you watch him week in, week out, playing in what is currently a mis-firing Manchester United side? Ask anybody in football if they'd like Wayne Rooney in their side and they'd likely bite your hand off. My money is still on Brazil or Italy but "very little chance" for England?

Interesting that every bookmaker in the world disagrees with your asssessment.
Good joke too about the EPL being a retirement league for Spanish and Italian players. The facts don't really bear it out of course but worth the joke nonetheless.
I do agree that Australia have the capacity to surprise a few people. Provided they realise that their titanic struggle against Uruguay was actually against the fifth best team in South America (behind Ecuador and Paraguay), and also that, alas, they won't be able to play Solomon Islands nor Tahiti in Germany (this wind-up merchant thing is pretty easy innit 😉)
PS: Oh, and it was 3-1, not 3-0. 😉
