Err, Michael Owen has scored 35 goals in 70 international appearances. That record at the highest level is comparable with virtually any other striker in world football. Overrated? You sure? Wayne Rooney is regarded by a large number of people as the best player in the world for his age, and repeatedly carries the Manchester United and England teams almost sin his wind-up merchant thing is pretty easy innit 😉)
PS: Oh, and it was 3-1, not 3-0. 😉
Yes, sorry 3-1 and i think Rooney scored it too.
Yes Rooney is good, but i still think he is over-rated. I guess he might prove me wrong this world cup when he meets some real competition on a world stage, but till then.
And England always features well in the odd's.
Every up to date listing regarding Michael Owen's record that I've seen says it's 35 goals from 75 caps. The two most recent goals came in the win against Argentina in November 2005.
Real competition on the world stage? Let's take a look... At Euro 2004 Wayne Rooney scored two goals against Switzerland, two against Croatia, won a penalty against France with a brilliant run, finished England's top scorer in the tournament, was consistently good in all four games he played (came off injured in the quarter-final) and was hailed for his performances. He was 18. His international goalscoring record now stands at 9 goals from 18 games. Most impartial observers would place him as man of the match in at least half of those 18 games, not for his goals but for his all round play against teams "on the world stage". He was instrumental in England's friendly victory against a very strong Argentinian side that played very well. He excelled in most of England's qualifying games for WC '06. And all that's leaving aside his hattrick on his debut in European club football in the Champions League. He's done stupid things (the away friendly against Spain for instance), but his performances on the 'world stage' to date have been excellent, in my and I think most people's opinion who have so far watched the games he's played in. Anyway, let's agree to differ 🙂

England have very little chance of winning. Beckham, Owen and Rooney are all some of the most over-rated players in the soccer world. Hardly no English players have been succesful in leagues other than their own. And well, the EPL is the Spanish and Italian retirement league.
I think Italy have a great chance. They have one of the worlds best defence an ...[text shortened]... strength England 3-0 last time we played.
Holland might do well if they don't choke (again).
Originally posted by schakuhrAye, Toni's been outstanding in Serie A so far this season and I think Italy are undefeated in their last 15 games. Who will Italy play up front in Germany, Toni and Gilardino or...?
I like Italy for winning these championships. They've got a very dangerous forward with Luca Toni. I won't be surprised if he will be the topscorer of the tournament.
Originally posted by Dr StrangeloveI think certainly in the UK England's odds are generally lower than perhaps elsewhere, and so in that respect I'd go along with Esoteric's post. This is partly because UK bookmakers are aware of how many people blindly put a bet on England, regardless of how realistic their hopes are. I'm no bookmaker but I imagine this fosters a certain wariness amongst bookies when it comes to quoting England odds (plus by the same token, wariness or no wariness, simply because people in the UK often bet on England regardless the UK bookmakers know that they don't have to make the odds awfully attractive to encourage bets).
BECAUSE they always have a good enough team CAPABLE of winning.
What is revealing this time however is that it's not just UK bookmakers quoting relatively low prices on England.
Originally posted by T1000I hope England do well, i just dont think they will. But part of me say's that due to the influx of foreign players into the EPL they might be able to suss out tactics a little better.
