I can remember the time when we were freaking out about youngsters drinking them 'Alcopops'; gotta hand it to the boys in marketing though, if they can get us to drink liquid nitrogen.

Why would anyone even be tempted to have a drink with liquid nitrogen in it??? This puzzles me and yet reaffirms my belief that the bulk of humanity is mentally devolving to some earlier, more stupid, state.

I was at a street fair last week and for the first time, saw a vendor selling punch that had a piece of dry ice in it, making "fog". This is nothing new to most of us, except for its use in drinks at a street fair. Search results suggest big problems if you swallow a piece. (Boys being boys, and all.) Even putting it down someone's shirt could be bad.

Yeah, even to handle dry ice you need gloves.

If you willingly drink liquid nitrogen, then I would guess nature has predetermined you for extinction; due to you being a thicko-delux.

the fact that it was served in a cocktail bar, to an unsuspecting young women, perhaps
already inebriated and unaware of the dangers is perhaps the reason, after all, I doubt
she was thinking, oh good, ill order a liquid nitrogen, boiling at -196 °C,

yah think!

Helium is a very inert gas, so I doubt that there are any lasting side effects caused by inhaling it.

It could be dangerous for the spectators, if they laugh so much they fall over and break something when the helium abuser speaks.

Did I mention the girl, or the story, or the real life tragedy? Do you really think I don't care??

Just a technicality: other reports say it was a drink "made with" LN2. The drink would have been chilled to a dangerous sub zero level, depending on the alcohol content, but as a chemist who has worked with LN2 I disagree with the reports that she actually ingested LN2. First, it wouldn't stay in the glass with an aqueous liquid, or would freeze the alcoholic solution solid if enough LN2 were used, and it is even less likely that any LN2 would make it all the way to the stomach. There would be no situation where an aqueous alcohol solution can have LN2 in it. I suspect she quickly downed a double shot of booze that was well below zero C, made with but not containing any residual LN2.

Here is a video of a drink being prepped. It looks like the visual effect is the main thing, and that comes from the rapid vaporization (boiling off) of the LN2.

I know you care, but a little understanding surely?
