I give to charities that aid the homeless, that way I don't get suckered by profesional panhandlers

I would love to sit around drinking all day every day but i can't afford it. I have to work. Sometimes if I see a disabled person begging i will give them a few quid.

i don't give money to people on the street, but i do give to (secular) organisations that support the desperately poor in developing countries, millions of whom are subsisting on < US$2 per day.

Do you? Why or why not?
I give money to panhandlers depending on 1) my mood 2) they're tough looking men in my neighborhood who I want to look in the eyes as I do them a favor so they'll know I don't hate them but that they better not pull anything where I live.

Or 3) I guess if they look really unhappy - especially women - I might help them out and have a few words with the person. For example, I ran into a nasty looking woman, dirty, skinny, callused, hair all kinky and dirty, crying outside of a 7-11, off in the back where she could rest for a minute. She said (once I approached her out of concern) her Mom used to put out cigarettes on her feet so it hurt her to walk around, and being homeless she was always on her feet.
