Japan and Kate Bush usually use great bass players..... listen to "heads you're dancing" ( Kate) ... and lo and behold, the bass player is the bloke from Japan whose name escapes me for the minute! Also, if you have ever listened to the great radio comedy "the Blackburn files" the intro ( solo bass) is whizzo... don't know who played it though. Come to think of it, I've written and played a frew nifty bass lines meself!
Most of the really great stuff isn't to be found in pop music.
Check out Wilbur Ware on Sonny Rollins' "A Night at the Villiage Vanguard".
For something more contemporary, check out John Lindberg who seems to consistently produce infectious bass lines. Lindberg's "Bounce" is a good place to start.
Thanks for refreshing my ageing memory... yes, Mick Karn... one of those pesky multi-talented types. I saw Japan once and he never glanced at the neck once all night. Eek.I see someone else mentioned the Cure... I got to like them through seeing them play Primary on TOTP, with Robert Smith and the real bass ( I've forgotten his blasted name as well!) player both playing bass...very amusing. Bruce Foxton has got a well-deserved mention too I see... fantastic bass lines from him, but he never made it once the Jam split up.

Fave bassist- the guy from Violent Femmes,Brian Ritchie is it?He uses an acoustic bass everytime and I just love.
