Anyone else playing through this at the moment? What do you think to it?

Firstly, I loved the intro movie - especially when played again setup on 5.1 surround.

Love some of the new features such as 'favourites' in Arcade mode, I added the Honda Civic 98' straight away then raced around High Speed Ring for old times sake πŸ™‚ , not so keen on the B-Spec mode (race director), seems a bit pointless if you ask me!

Anyway, gotta go push my Lupo a bit harder to win the Sunday Cup πŸ˜€

It looks amazing. It makes me wish I was back in University, playing GT, smokin doobs and hangin out. Ahhh, them were the daze. =)

I got GT4 a couple of weeks ago - I went through all the license tests (apart from the special tests) and have done a few of the championships. I haven't tried the arcade mode yet, but I did look at the B-Spec mode.

The biggest time sapper so far has been the photography mode... where you can go around a course with a camera and take photos with traditional camera controls - great fun. I even posted some of the pics to my blog in a moment of childish enthusiasm πŸ™‚

I think it's probably the best overall car racing *game* in existance. It's such good fun - and there is always the carrot of the cars to win...

It seems that if you complete any of the licenses with all the same colour award (I am stickler for getting bronze) then you get a concept car - which is a nice reward (beats the lupo).

Last night I unlocked the Nike 2022 concept, which is a 4WD 8 speed micro-beast for the international-B license.

I heard a rumour that if I go and get all silvers I can get a better concept car on each license.

On a bit of a downer, I am dissapointed that GT Mode racing is still against cars with the AI of a brick, and as such overtaking becomes a 'will I hit it at the right angle as it turns into the bend' excercise. Still - 'tis fun to cause crashes anyway πŸ™‚

The problem with the AI is linked to that of car damage, and the straightforward horsepower of the PS2.

Polyphony Digital have maximised the basic "look and feel" of GT. AI is by far the most complex thing to get right, and takes up mounds of processing time (it isn't just a pile of "elseif" statements). You can look at games like TOCA 2 on the PS2 or X-Box to see better AI, but at the expense of the graphics.

The lack of car damage in GT4 is almost certainly one of resources. If the cars were bendable, they have to do so realistically; and that means storing anything up to 10 times the amount of 3d parts for each car. Again - TOCA 2 does it, but it doesn't look quite as polished as GT4. There is another side to this too - what good is having vehicle damage without good AI? - the rest of the field will almost certainly cripple themselves (and you) if they cannot sensibly avoid each other.

On the plus side, at least GT4 finally has fuel usage - so in anything 20 laps or over it becomes an issue with the monster 600bhp+ cars. I learned the hard way the other night with tyre usage too; managed to melt a set of hard tyres and saw my lead slip from 9 seconds to 2 seconds on the last lap of a race...
