I live opposite a dentist; his nickname is Painless - god knows why, I went for a check up at his place once and he was anything but.

Ok, I don't know what it is, but green apples destroy my teeth and/or gums. I'm trying to eat one right now, but it's making my teeth (Gums maybe?) hurt like a mother. Does this happen to anyone else? It's very inconvenient. 🙁
As a kid I was told how to brush: get a big, hard tooth brush and scrub like crazy. What it did was wear grooves in the enamel around the gum line. Then with age and shrinking gums, part of the root gets exposed. Anything acid makes my teeth hurt. The dentist sent me to a specialist who could fix them for only $1900, and even though my insurance would pay most of the bill, I chickened out because I don’t like going to the dentist. I avoid acid food/drink and use Sensodyne toothpaste as needed.

Have you ever read "The water method man" by John Irving?

Not everyone has health care. 😳 Here's what you need to know though about your teeth:

Plaque builds up near the gum line, sometimes from drinking coffee, sometimes just from a person's chemistry, but if not removed it will cause the gums to recede. Pretty soon the plaque works down below the gum line where you can't even see it and the tooth becomes a little loose. It's extremely important at this stage that the person go in for a standard cleaning - you don't have to 'go see the Dentist for advice' if you don't have health insurance. You just schedule an appointment with the Dentist's office for a standard cleaning which is less than what they really want to charge you (X-rays, tests, etc.)

Here's the good news. If you don't have $80 bux for a standard cleaning then call up one of the local Dental colleges. They offer free cleaning by their students. Yeah, it's not a wonderful experience but they will get the plaque out because they have a professional checking everything they do.

I know this is hard for some people. It's easier to just 'ignore' the problem... but that's the absolute worst thing to do. The plaque below the gum line MUST be removed. If not the teeth become so loose they move when you chew, forcing food down below the gums. This leads to serious gum disease and you will lose all your teeth. 😳

Meanwhile, until one can get an appointment through a Dental college, brush with salt.

How ironic. I have a chess video by GM Daniel King called Endings - the Essentials . Has anyone seen this? As soon as you start playing it, the video shows a smiling GM Daniel King with a BIG GAP in his teeth! Yeah, he has a missing front tooth.

I guess even GM's can't afford decent health care. 🙁

What Sicilian Smaugh means to say is:

"The teeth need looking after. If you go to a dentist he will make you feel secure, crack a few jokes and voila! You'll leave feeling none the worse, but all the better!
