I have seen Harry S. Truman, Dwight David Eisenhower, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Arturo Toscanini. I have been alone in a small airport waiting room with then senator from SD Tom Daschel....new HUD appointee by Barack Obama....(we did not speak), and was alone backstage in the Seattle Opera House when Sir Arthur Fiedler, founder and conductor of The Boston Pops, strode past me. Our eyes met, and his persian lamb coat...draped over his arm...brushed over my foot. He probably was surprised that I did not ask him for his autograph! I was a senior in high school and engaged to the trombone player in the Seattle Symphony at the time.

I met Sen. Ted Kennedy when he came for a drink in the evening to briefly shmooze at a law firm I worked at in 1993. We readied ourselves for hours and he stayed 10 minutes. I stood behind Carly Simon in a Martha's Vineyard grocery line in the mid-90's. She was very tall and strong-looking. When I was a kid, I met and had an autograph signed by Anthony Perkins, who played Norman Bates in the movie, Psycho.
I saw the manager of the Sex Pistols one time. The boss told us that the owner of the house we were buliding was the bodyguard and manager of that group. One day we were working and some people came in and I heard something like "How ya doing mate" I looked back and saw them and I guess I said "Hello" and started back to the work. P.S. It was strange to heard someone speak like that. It was the only time I ever heard a British accent.

I take precautions against ever meeting anyone famous. because even when they happen to be your personal heroes, you just end up feeling like a total idiot.
one of the most awkward situations I've ever been in, was when a friend I've known all my life wanted to introduce me to his friend. now, this friend of mine is one of the top rock stars in finland, and the friend he wanted to introduce is a musical hero of both of us since our teens. a huge deal for us, so to say. - so he had been talking for quite some time to both of us about how great the other guy is, and that we should definitely meet, and I had always managed to avoid it all. but eventually he set it up in a party and phoned the other guy there. so the guy came, my friend sat us both down together, and left us there!
the most painfully awkward hour I've ever spent. we had absolutely nothing in common, and neither of us are the type to make idle chit chat. I'm not gonna ask him if he's got a record or a book coming up, or rant on how big of an influence he's been to me, hell no. so most of it was both of us not talking. simply horrible.
