On this topic perhaps it means, "I feel bad for the family, go ahead and make your jokes... funny guys!"

When our soldiers are killed in battle the soldiers are flown back to Toronto and then driven along the highway to the local military base. Our government renamed the section of the highway that they travel to "The Highway of Heroes". Now when you drive along this section of the highway, you see a sign on the side of the road, just after a speed limit sign, that just says "Highway of Heroes".
It's tokenism at its worst. It makes people feel like they're doing something substantial when in fact all we did was put a sign up on the side of a road. Big frickin deal!
When you want to do something, just ask yourself, "will this make a real difference?"

You would have us do nothing, honor no one becuase you feel it's useless? That's how you feel about it, and it's a grim outlook on life.

If you really WANT to do something, then make it a something substantial. Our federal government did it as a cheap PR stunt. Sure some people all up for it, but most see it for what it is...something cheap and easy that requires no effort by anybody other than paying some guy 50 bux to hammer a sign into the ground.
If we really wanted to do something for our soldiers maybe we'd spend the money and equip them with better equipment and better salaries. Maybe we'd give them everything they asked for in order to do their jobs. Maybe when they did die there would be cermonies broadcast nation wide, and their families compensated financially for their loss and sacrifice. Maybe someone would ask the families if they'd rather have the respect and honour of a grateful nation, or if they'd rather just a have a sign on the side of some dirty ass road.
Maybe we'd realize that the families don't need a sign to tell them their son is a hero.

With luck, gramps will reach around and give that little brat a swift smack across the FACE! The highway is there not just for this generation, but generations to come so NO ONE ever forgets.
