hi, i have been following some games, i noticed that one or two players had consistently good ratings then suddenly they crash so that their rating graph looks like the side of a mountain, how is this possible ?, what happens ?, do they lose confidence, try playing dubious openings, take on too many games? one guy was playing consistently good chess and had achieved a 2000+ rating, suddenly he plummets to 1190???, can anyone explain this phenomena - regards robert.

Could be any number of reasons. As you suggest, maybe too many games, or other priorities in life.

Sometimes they might have been putting off lots of lost games in order to get a high rating.

I think that the player you are looking at put himself into vacation mode, played lots of games, and only finished the ones he was winning.

Then, after the first of the year, he took himself off of vacation and either resigned or allowed timeouts in all of the games he was losing.

That kind of rapid degradation in a rating can mean only one thing: they are obviously cheating, using their cell phone to play the game for them.

You can catch them by matching their moves with those chosen by the phone. For example, my phone as Black plays 1.e4 d5 2.ed5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qxa2??? - Dead giveaway. Only a cell-phone level chess engine is capable of playing at this level.

They get frustrated by the level of competition, and drop to a lower level so they can win tournaments.

hi this is what i originally suspected although had no way of proving, however to play consistently at a 2000+ level would suggest that they were using a different engine than a mobile phone which as you suggest seems quite weak, although i have never played one - regards Robert.😀

How about this guy that keeps asking to give him a draw so he can get off his team? Sounds crazy, but true. If he gets draws from higher rated players The higher player loses points. This is happening in the 2008 championship. Seems very fishy to me.
