So, not proper billiards, then? Not large enough, and the pockets get in the way.
Also not proper snooker billiards - right amount of pockets, but not nearly large enough.

Pool's a gambling game, not a cue sport.

Arguably, it's a kind of equilibrium: for that which is taken away, another is left untouched. They balance each other out.
