I see your point if it concerns serious conversation and I agree that "I was only joking" is a sorry refuge for small minded people and bigots. But those of us that live by our very dry wits sometimes have to back up and explain. And here, where our voices get converted into electrons, well sometimes the smiley face doesn't quite do the job.
importance that succeed in generating more heat than light as well as personality attack tirades ad infinitum, ad nauseam, etc, that signify
nothing. At the very least, it seems we should level up to the code of honor among thieves principle... grudging respect and transparency.
Of course "backing up to explain" or clarify or provide additional information is often necessary but "only joking" attempts to absolve.
